10 Tips & Tricks For Longer Lasting Makeup

I get so many people asking me, "What are some things I can do that will keep my makeup lasting all day long?"  There are a few simple, yet effective, ways you can achieve this!

1. My first and most important tip is to start with a good base.  Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!  Makeup that sets on flaky skin just flakes off throughout the day.  The smoother the skin, the better!  A simple way to do this is to use a washcloth, lightly buffing away any dead cells on the surface of your skin.

2. Don't forget to moisturize!  ...Just don't over-moisturize.  We all love skin that looks super hydrated, but we have to be careful when we want really long-lasting makeup!  Makeup will tend to fade quickly if a really rich moisturizer is used.  If you're someone who has really dry skin, and NEEDS to give it extra hydration, you can definitely still slather on the moisturizer!  Just be sure to let it it soak in for at least 10-15 mins before applying foundation.  I would recommend the Bare Minerals Smart Combination Smoothing Lightweight Emulsion moisturizer because it's lightweight and oil-free which is key for a long-lasting result.  It also does not contain SPF which is perfect for flash-photography!

3. Using a primer is essential - especially if you have oily skin.  Pesky oil will break down the makeup that you've worked so hard on!  Primers also help smooth out texture and makes your skin appear poreless.  You can also apply it to your eyelids to keep your eyeshadow in place.  Battling oily skin myself, I have been able to test out tons of primers and have found my go-to!  My favorite by far is The POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel by Benefit.  It doesn't leave your skin feeling greasy or oily after applying it...just gives a super weightless and smooth finish!  The POREfessional Face Primer is the original primer that Benefit launched, and is also an amazing product for more normal-dry skin types.

4. Believe in the power of powder!  Always set your foundation and concealer with a loose powder that is either the same shade or translucent.  This helps the liquid or cream makeup from fading or moving around/creasing throughout the day.  I loving using a big fluffy synthetic brush for all over the face, and a smaller synthetic brush for under the eyes and eyelids.  Laura Mercier's Translucent Loose Setting Powder is by far the best powder I've used, giving a flawless finish for every skin tone.

5. Water-resistant mascaras & waterproof eyeliners are life changing.  The reason why I recommend water-resistant mascara is because it doesn't run or transfer when you're out and about, yet it's super easy to remove at the end of the day, unlike water-proof mascaras.  Check out Burberry Cat Lashes for the ultimate clump-free, voluminous, long-wearing mascara!

6. Normally, powder blush tends to fade after only a few hours of wear, but if you apply a cream blush before dusting on the same color of powder blush, it will last twice as long!

7. If you love full-looking brows, but don't love worrying about them smudging or fading over time, use an eyeshadow primer like Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion.  You're probably thinking it's silly or weird, but trust me - it works!  All you have to do is take a clear eyeshadow primer and rub it in where you're going to be applying your eyebrow pencil or gel.  Want to take it a step further and make your eyebrow makeup waterproof?  Gently dabbing on an eyebrow sealer like Model In A Bottle after applying your eyebrow product will do the trick and make it instantly water-proof!

8. Of course, using a lip color that doesn't smudge, transfer, or wear off is a must.  And of course, my go-to is LipSense...it never fails!

9. Once you've completed your makeup application, give it some added protection!  Lightly spritz your entire face with a setting spray.  One that I have been using and loving recently is Urban Decay's All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray.  This acts as a "top coat" and can help keep your makeup looking fresh for up to 12 hours!

10. Last but not least, make sure to bring a touch-up kit with you when you leave the house.  Pack your lip color, little bit of concealer, and compact powder.  Most importantly, if you have oily skin, I can't recommend blotting tissues enough!  Boscia Green Tea Blotting Linens remove oil and shine without caking on powder.
